Verification method
Image verification guide
The methodology we follow to verify visual material before publication.
- 01
Trace the first source
We look for the earliest published copy through reverse image search and publication dates, and attribute the item to its original author.
- 02
Verify the place
We match visible landmarks (buildings, roads, signs, terrain) against satellite imagery, maps and other material from the same location.
- 03
Verify the time
We compare shadows, weather, metadata and first publication time against the known sequence of events.
- 04
Check for manipulation
We look for signs of digital editing and reuse from earlier events, and exclude any item of unknown or doubtful origin.
- 05
Transparency
An item carries the “Verified” badge only once these steps are complete, and its sources are listed in full on its page.
